What is osmosis in a boat?
In general terms, osmosis occurs when moisture penetrates through the outer layers of the hull and reacts with certain components within the laminate. Over time, this process can create pressure beneath the gelcoat and cause small blisters to appear.
The problem is usually found on the underwater hull, meaning the part of the hull that remains submerged. However, its external appearance alone does not always reveal the depth or severity of the damage.
Main symptoms to watch for
A visual inspection can help identify possible signs, although confirmation should be carried out by a professional. Some common indications include:
- Blisters or small raised areas on the gelcoat.
- Areas showing colour changes or uneven deterioration of the finish.
- Cracks, pores or flaking on the surface.
- Persistent moisture beneath the outer layers.
- Previously repaired areas that begin to show irregularities again.

What happens if it is not repaired in time?

- Removal of deteriorated fibres and resins.
- Reconstruction of the area using compatible materials.
- Application of new protective and finishing layers.
- Sanding, fairing and painting the surface.
The repair must respect the hull’s original configuration and the mechanical requirements of the affected area. This requires determining which material is most suitable.
